Position announcement for Biological Scientists IV - Research on the giant African land snail, Gainesville, FL

This is a highly professional position responsible for scientific research on the giant African land snail (GALS) for the purpose of developing and implementing new control measures for this serious agricultural and urban pest.

Designs and supervises investigations into the population, migration, life history, natural enemies, host relations and other environmental factors regarding giant African snails. These investigations are carried out in the lab and in the field.

Position announcement for Invertebrate Zoology Collections Manager, CU Boulder

Posting Description: The University of Colorado Museum (CU Museum) is a world-class natural history museum nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, Colorado. The CU Museum has an extensive zoology collection and we are looking for a collections manager to guide the continued growth and management of the physical collections and associated resources including archives and paper records, databases, informatics tools, tissues and genomic resources. Although we seek a collections manager with broad zoological interests, the focus of effort for this position is in Invertebrate Zoology. Strengths of the invertebrate collection include extensive mollusk and crayfish material from the Rocky Mountains and adjacent plains as well as important national and international holdings from other crustacean and annelid groups. The vertebrate collections have similar geographic focus and are world-renowned

Additional Posting Description Duties include: Assists curator(s) in the management of zoological collections including specimen preparation, cataloguing and database management; systematic arrangement and storage; conservation; routine collections tasks (i.e., sectional correspondence, assistance to visitors, response to requests for information, and processing of loans); museum and local community service (such as general inquiries and collection tours); training and supervision of students and volunteers. Emerging new duties will include management of tissues, genomic and sequence data, along with ability to use tools essential for publishing databases to aggregators such as GBIF.

This is a 75% time position (30 hours per week), with annual salary of $34,526, health benefits, and pro rata vacation and sick leave provided.

Required Education/Experience/Skills: (Minimum Qualifications) M.S. degree in relevant field (Biology, Zoology, Museum and Field Studies) or equivalent experience and education is required.

Desired qualifications: Prior experience in collection management (or closely related work) is not required but will be given high priority. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Also preferred is experience utilizing tools in museum and biodiversity informatics such the Integrated Publishing Toolkit, along with a background and experience in molecular diagnostic techniques such as gene sequencing.

Molluscan Literature Available

I have started to dispose of my rather large library of molluscan literature. Some lists are already posted but entire sections of the library have not yet been listed. If you have a want list of desired malacological works, please send it to me. However, I have very little on non-marine or Paleozoic mollusks.

The lists that are already available can be read on, or downloaded from http://conchologia.com. Future lists will be added infrequently as they are generated. If you would like to be notified when lists on certain areas or subjects are listed, please let me know and I will advise when they are ready.

Position announcement at Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, Sanibel Island, Florida

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel Island, Florida, seeks a collection manager to work on a processing and cataloguing project of its world-class mollusk collection. The collections manager will be responsible for day-to-day activities in the collection and reports to the Museum Director/Curator. The position is funded by a "Museums for America" grant from the Institute for Museums and Library Services, under the Collections Stewardship initiative. This is a full-time (12-month appointment) position, with possible renewal for two additional years.

Virtual Forum on the biology and management of invasive New Zealand Mud Snail

Virtual Forum: biology and management of invasive New Zealand Mud Snail will be hosted online by RIVRLab at University of California, Santa Barbara. The goal of this forum is to provide an opportunity for investigators to share existing and generate new knowledge about P. antipodarum and to stimulate contacts and cooperation between scientists working with NZMS. The forum is being organized by RIVRLab (Riparian InVasion Research Laboratory; as a product of a collaborative effort with the University of Montana’s New Zealand Mudsnails in the Western USA project and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service - Aquatic Nuisance Species program. American Malacological Bulletin to be on BioOne

Dear Readers,

I am happy to announce that beginning in January 2009, the American Malacological Bulletin will be available on BioOne (www.bioone.org), an essential electronic aggregation of over 140 cutting-edge bioscience research journals. Volumes 22-25, as well as current issues published in 2009 and onwards, will be available in both PDF and XML formats. The Bulletin will be available to all institutional subscribers of the BioOne.2 collection. Libraries wishing to subscribe or those with any questions should contact BioOne directly. We are also working on developing a link through our web page to allow subscribers to download pdfs of papers. Our hope is that this increased electronic visibility of our journal will add to its stature and allow us to recruit cutting edge papers on malacology.
